The Low Country of South Carolina offers a lot of fun family activities, and, luckily, the Blue Crab Retreat is in a location central to many must-see areas. The charming town of Beaufort, just 40 minutes from our home, is a great place to have some fun and enjoy South Carolina’s coast.
One of the best ways to get started exploring Beaufort is by hopping on Captain Dick’s River Tours. These river tours depart from the marina in downtown Beaufort and offer guests a chance to learn about Beaufort’s wildlife and history, all while relaxing and breathing in the ocean air. Daytime tours, which last about an hour and 15 minutes, are offered each day, while “sunset cruises” run April-October and are typically about two hours long. The daytime rates are $20 per adult and $12 per child (ages 12 and under), while the evening tour is $28 per passenger, regardless of age. Call in advance to book your group’s spot on the boat, and don’t forget that you can bring a cooler on the evening tour!
If you haven’t gotten enough of the water after the cruise, walk over to the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park. This park is also downtown Beaufort and offers amazing views of the Beaufort River, the Woods Memorial Bridge, Parris Island, and more. Spend a leisurely afternoon sitting on a swing and watching boats come to and from the harbor or fishing on the docks. Bring the kids with to enjoy the park’s atmosphere and play on the public playground!
A peaceful day by the water calls for some casual dining. Stay downtown and enjoy Q on Bay, a barbecue restaurant that will allow you to enjoy both the Southern charm and bay-front views of Beaufort. Another local favorite is Plums, which takes advantage of its Low Country location by serving fresh seafood and having a changing menu based on seasonal ingredients. After eating, take the kids for a treat at Southern Sweets Ice Cream Parlor and Sandwich shop, which serves old-fashioned sundaes and shakes as well as creative ice cream concoctions.
